Didactic Education Geriatric

As a Physical Therapist Assistant student, a portion of my studies dealt with treating the geriatric population. We covered musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and neurological aspects of physical therapy. In the Fall of 2020, I completed the course; PTA Management of Cardiopulmonary and Integumentary Conditions (10-524-146). This class covered the concepts of vital signs, cardiac disorders and rebab, exercise testing, pulmonary disorders and rehab, amputations and prosthetics, wound healing, assessment, and dressing, and burns. Fall 2020, I completed PTA Principals of Neuromuscular Rehabilitation (10-524-144). The course work for this class included studies in the nervous system, sensory system, motor control & learning, assessment of tone, posture, and gait, PNF concepts. Traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, cardiovascular accidents, and neuromuscular disorders were covered in the course.

This article review covered the use of high intensity training in patients with Parkinson's Disease up to age 85. It is important as PTA to be able use evidence-based practice, this entails the ability to effectively research and review articles for use in clinical practice.
